Project Details
Wingates were Lead Designers for the new Auckland headquarters of a global professional services company – a workplace that marks a significant step in their journey in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Located on Level 5 at 131 Queen Street, the 1300m² office fitout brings together five previously dispersed teams into one unified and collaborative space. This purpose-built environment supports their wide-vision strategy for Aotearoa, fostering connection, innovation, and a sense of place.

Design grounded in cultural context
At the heart of this workplace design was a commitment to cultural authenticity and site-specific storytelling. Wingates worked in close collaboration with cultural advisor Graham Tipene (Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei) to embed the rich narratives of Tāmaki Makaurau into the project. These insights shaped many design details – including bespoke CNC-routered panels that reference the local landscape and stories.

Innovative materials and spatial storytelling
From the AV wall that greets visitors, to the sequence of spaces inspired by the elements of wind, water, and movement, the interior journey leads to a central social hub – a flexible gathering space with terraced seating that embraces the full height of the heritage building.
Materials such as Kaynemaile mesh, 3D-printed concrete, and precision-engineered surfaces reflect the client’s global ethos – delivering the promise of technology and human ingenuity through locally grounded design.

Connection to place and perspective
Perimeter terraces offer moments of reflection and a chance to connect with the surrounding city and landmarks. This physical and philosophical act of looking outward reflects the guiding whakataukī of the workplace: He rangi tā matawhāiti, he rangi tā matawhānui – "A person with narrow vision has a restricted horizon. A person with wide vision has plentiful opportunities."

A balance of heritage and modernity
Set within a character-filled heritage building, the design reveals and celebrates original features like fluted columns and high ceilings, while layering in contemporary detailing and exposed services. The result is a dynamic and future-focused workplace that feels deeply rooted in its context – creating a place that truly matters.
